What Powers Novell’s Design Process: The Tools That Bring Ideas to Life

Behind every beautifully crafted home is a combination of vision, creativity, and the right software tools to bring ideas to life. At Novell Design Build, our Design Team lean on a mix of industry-leading software and creative platforms to shape spaces that are both stunning and functional.
Here are a few of their favourites:

Adobe Creative Suite

A go-to for design inspiration and visual storytelling. Adobe Creative Suite allows our team to refine presentations, mood boards, and graphics that help homeowners see the bigger picture.

Revit (BIM)

Building Information Modeling with Revit makes it possible to bring architectural concepts to life with precision. It’s not just about drawings — it’s about modeling an entire home digitally before it’s built, ensuring sure every little detail works.

For visual collaboration, Miro is a favourite! It’s an interactive platform where ideas can come together in real time, perfect for sketching out early concepts, mapping project flows, and presenting design directions to homeowners in a clear, engaging way.

Vectorworks (CAD)

Our designers love Vectorworks for its flexibility. There’s no single “right” way to produce drawings — it adapts to each designer’s workflow. It’s also feature-packed: when we draw in Vectorworks, we’re not just drawing lines. Every wall, roofline, and vaulted ceiling is built in 3D at the same time, allowing us to evaluate proportions, overhangs, and spatial flow as we go. For homeowners, this means a clearer, more accurate picture of what their future home will feel like.

When it comes to rendering, Enscape is our tool of choice. It lets us create realistic 3D walkthroughs and visualizations, so clients can “step into” their project before construction begins.

Pinterest

Inspiration is everywhere, and Pinterest is one of our favourite platforms for gathering ideas, sharing design directions, and collaborating with homeowners on the look and feel of their dream home.

The right tools don’t just streamline workflow — they shape how we think, collaborate, and explore design. Each platform opens new ways to visualize, refine, and share ideas, and together they create a process that balances precision with creativity.

Avoiding a Monstrosity when it comes to Missing Middle Multiplexes; Begins with Design Excellence

As you may have seen recently in the Vancouver Sun, multiplexes have become a lightning rod of controversy, with strong feelings on all sides. Communities are being affected positively with the gift of choice, but also negatively with boxy, unfriendly construction.

What is a Vancouver special?

Sometimes polarizing, the Vancouver Special is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable house styles in Metro Vancouver. Developed locally and rarely seen elsewhere, these homes were built primarily between the 1960s and 1980s.

What is the British Columbia Step Code?

In striving to reduce our carbon footprint, the government is regulating that future homes will need to be Net-Zero. To achieve this goal, the province has introduced the BC Step Code as part of the province’s Building Act to serve as the roadmap to Net-Zero. The code is structured in "steps," ranging from Step 1 to Step 5, with each step mandating higher energy performance levels.
